π The latest issue of our CDG Global Development Brief is out!
This week’s focus: on 24 September, the UN General Assembly adopted the world’s first political declaration on sea level rise β unanimously, after months of negotiation. Small island states don’t automatically lose their statehood, sovereignty or maritime claims should their territory become uninhabitable. Palau’s President Surangel Whipps Jr. called it ‘a moment of international solidarity.’
The diplomacy didn’t stay symbolic: at the Pacific Islands Forum in Palau, Australia (null~AUD30m), the UK (Β£10m for the new, Pacific-owned Pacific Resilience Facility) and the US ($150m+) all pledged concrete funding for the Pacific in a single week.
Also this week: the planned SCO development bank between China, Russia and India remains stalled, Indonesia takes control of its Chinese-financed high-speed rail line, and two new reports (ALNAP, OECD/UNDP) show just how much pressure humanitarian funding and partner-country ownership are under. Plus: the latest on Germany’s budget deliberations.
