The Carl Duisberg Society e. V. (CDG) is an economic player in German development cooperation based in Hanover with a capital city representation in Berlin.

As a bridge between companies, government development cooperation, and international partner countries, it systematically brings the perspectives of the economy into development policy processes.

In close cooperation with the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), the CDG contributes to the implementation of practical and market-oriented programs.

It is a member of the GIZ Economic Advisory Board, to which it sends half of the members according to the contract with the BMZ, and has a seat and vote on the GIZ Board of Trustees.

The core of its work emerged in international vocational education as a key to sustainable economic development.

The CDG supports people in gaining operational and economic experience worldwide. It promotes entrepreneurial thinking, intercultural competence, and international action security – qualifications that are of central importance for personal development as well as for globally networked markets in developing and emerging countries of the global South as well as in industrialized countries.

Entrepreneurial Thinking. Partnership Development.

The entrepreneur Carl Duisberg recognized the strategic potential of international practical experience for the development of entrepreneurial skills and intercultural action security as early as the 1920s. Long before terms like “globalization,” “competitiveness,” or “export strength” became part of everyday language, he encouraged working students and young professionals to travel to the United States to work and gain international experience. His goal: to specifically promote internationally minded young professionals for a globally operating economy.

This vision is carried by the Carl Duisberg Society e. V. (CDG) to this day – with a special focus on the connection of economic development cooperation, international vocational education, and entrepreneurial qualification. The association unites around 140 members, mainly from the German economy, supplemented by actors from politics, education, and civil society, who work together to enable young people for global markets, economic initiative, and partnership cooperation.

Promoting Young Talents, Shaping the Future

Especially in a time when economic resilience, entrepreneurial thinking, and innovation capability are required worldwide, the CDG places a special focus on promoting entrepreneurship skills. In Africa, Latin America, Central Asia, and Southeast Asia, it specifically supports programs that provide young people with practical entrepreneurial skills – for example, through vocational mobility programs, the establishment of start-up centers in collaboration with local partner institutions, or through training in digital entrepreneurship, sustainable economy, and social entrepreneurship.

At the same time, the CDG promotes the development of labor market-related skills along global value and supply chains in close cooperation with German companies and international partners. Its programs not only strengthen intercultural dialogue but also actively contribute to the qualification of future specialists and managers – both for German foreign trade and for independent economic development in partner countries.
